Golden Nugget is currently the biggest casino in downtown Las Vegas. It is located on the Flemont Street Experience and is owned by the restaurant chain Landry’s Restaurants.

The Golden Nugget was originally built in 1946 and it is one of the oldest casinos in the city. Steve Wynn took control over the business in 1973 as the youngest casino owner in Las Vegas. He is famous casino, resort and real estate developer that has been behind the revival of the Las Vegas strip in the 1990s. Wynn opened the first tower of the hotel in 1977 and won the casino and hotel’s first four diamond rating. This was his ticket to success. The second hotel tower was opened in 1984 followed by the third in 1989.

In the year 2000 the hotel and casino changed hands to Kirk Kerkorian and as part of the consolidated corporation MGM Mirage has become the biggest casino corporation in Las Vegas ever since. The MGM acquired the Mandalay Resort Group, built City Center and started building Macau Casino.

In 2004 Golden Nugget was sold to the Poster Financial Group. In 2005 the casino became property of its current owners the Texas-based Laundry’s Restaurants. The restaurant chain invested more than 100 million in renovation and expansion of the casino and hotel. This was followed by the Phase II worth 70 million which expanded the resort and added more entertainment facilities. Phase III added another 500 rooms in the 150-million new tower as well as the Chart House restaurant.

Now, the Golden Nugget has 2,300 deluxe hotel rooms and suites. It has kept its four diamond status for more than 30 years. As most entertainment related businesses the casino saw a sudden drop in its profits with the recession but has managed to recuperate quickly.
